We have a great treat for everyone.  We had the pleasure of having on our show two amazing women who are making a difference in Cambodia. These inspirational women are Dr. Lauren Marsden, Founder and Owner of VSL Veterinary Clinic Cambodia and Martina Mayr, Founder and Director of Animal Rescue Cambodia. The ladies discuss with Jake on the work they have been doing in response to the lack of animal welfare in Cambodia

A pet can be a great source of comfort, companionship and motivation for their owners. In many ways, pets can help us to live mentally healthier lives. It is great companion. They give owners company, a sense of security and someone to share the routine of the day with. Pets can be especially valuable company for those in later life and living alone.

People in all parts of life experience typical life stresses that can be comforted by a companion pet. It is thought that a dog can be a stress buffer that softens the effects of adverse events on a person. With an animal in the home, people with Alzheimer’s are thought to have fewer anxious outbursts.

The findings revealed that having a pet offers people a deep sense of “ontological security”. The feeling of stability, continuity, and meaning in one’s life. Every year, six to eight million dogs wait to be adopted from animals shelters so many that millions are euthanized each year due to overcrowding

Adopting a shelter animal not only gives your pet a second chance in a happy home, but can also save it from being euthanized in an overcrowded shelter. The mission at Animal Rescue Cambodia is to create sustainable animal welfare in Cambodia and end suffering for Cambodian street cats and dogs.

Animals undergo full physicals when they are brought to the shelter and many shelters have veterinary clinics on site to treat any medical issues that arise. Shelter staff makes sure animals are in top shape before they are ready to be adopted into a new home.

If you don’t have a pet or can’t get one right now, you can volunteer at a shelter. There are many animals that can still benefit from your love, and you will feel the benefits, too.
